It is a 1937 Delahaye 135M with all-aluminum envelope body by the British coachbuilder Abbott. This is the sportier, short wheelbase model, with an overhead valve, inline six cylinder engine of 3557cc. About 2000 chassis were produced from 1936 to 1951. Emile Delahaye established his automobile manufacturing company in 1894. A factory was built in Paris and manufacturing began in 1901, continuing there until 1954.
The Type 135 is considered as one of the most famous and prestigious vehicles produced by Delahaye. In both design and racing competition, it was very successful. Designed in 1934, it was quickly entered into races such as the 24 Heures du Mans, where it won first place in 1938, the Paris-Saint-Raphael motor race and the Monte-Carlo Rally, where in 1937, René Le Bègue and Julio Quinlin won the Monte Carlo Rally.
Today, the Delahaye marque is coveted by collectors and a number of world-class examples exist. This particular car is no exception. The owner has lovingly maintained it for more than forty years. Unfortunately, at a 2010 Concourse, it was damaged by a wind-borne picnic umbrella, causing a dent of about 6″ in the aluminum coachwork. Rather than “spot-in” the damaged area, he has opted for a complete exterior restoration and respray here at our shop.
